Project 0: UPGRADE

Using some of the same technology that is currently being implemented to help users control their prosthetic limbs, we can enhance the dexterity of individuals with naturally functioning hands. Each arm of these tiny sensors would have its own brain, similar to an octopus, that would not only respond to commands from the brain but also respond to sensations directly allowing it to more accurately predict movement. This would allow an individual to perform tasks with more precision without losing excess energy.

The Art of Noise Reading Response

Industrialized societies have been a key factor in shaping the concept of noise, especically for its own inhabitants. Other than its larger forces, nature is relatively quiet when compared to industrial societies. As humans began to experiment with noises and creating music communities were formed that began to establish elitist ideals concerning the value of certain noises. These ideals are also a key factor in shaping what society considers to be pleasant noise, or music. The introduction of industrial noise propelled the advancement of music with more complex instruments and orchestras. While these classical noise patterns are very appealing it was clear that in order for music to truly evolve we needed to expand our ideas of noises and instruments. Music today is comprised of countless genres and it is not uncommon for individuals to have multiple favorites.

While our acceptance of various noises as music has changed, so too has our appreciation of the artists that create them. A musical piece can be a direct result of an artist's experiences, or a representation of a person, place, or idea. The possibilities are limitless. Futurist Orchestra is an interesting concept because it takes various noises that are familiar to many individuals, takes them out of context, and combines them in various ways that create music. The noises alone are considered to be beautiful, however the art is in the varied combinations of those noises and the rhythms they create.

Taken out of context, these noises can create an experience completely unlike those they are commonly associated with. The next evolution of Futurist Orchestras could involve tuning the industrial world to the ear of individuals. This would mean inventions having more intention behind the noises they create, as well as the function of the inventions themselves. With that new practice, and many other positive ones, a society could potentially look pleasant, smell pleasant, and sound pleasant.

Elsenaar and Scha Reading Response

Using the human body as a conductor, or as a material object for interactive electronic art, has been
explored in numerous ways since the discovery of electricity. Throughout their research, scientists
began to discover our vulnerabilities to electricity. One of the most obvious is being overexposed to
electricity, which will kill a human. This was discovered through the deaths of countless animals and
eventually led to the implementation of the electric chair. While electricity has become a vital piece
of the foundation of modern societies, it is difficult to reconcile its dark origins.

The concept of "immediate art" is one that I was subconsciously aware of, but reading the defintion
really clarified the idea for me. I'm interested in researching more "immediate art" installations that
involve electricity, as well as some that use different mediums.

Electrical experiments and art installations were simultaneously progressing not only in concept, but
also in scale. Then even the scale of the concepts grew. Controlling a person using electricity,
controlling larger things using, and the mass control of people or things via the internet are all
possible. Currently, the scale of that control varies but new technology is constantly being developed
that could one day allow for the complete control of a human.

Despite the perceived dangers and dark past of electricity, it has also been used as a means for life
via defibrillators and as a potential cure for partial paralysis. All this, in addition to being an
integral part of modern societies. Electricity continues to be researched through scientific and artistic methods. As a medium in art, electricity can be either interactive or detached. People can interact with electronic art directly, or through another person who is part of the installation and may even be electrically charged in some way. The timeline of human interaction with electricity is fascinating and gives insight into the process of discovery.

What is Physicomp?

Physicomp is a concept that explores how the digital and physical worlds can be combined to create something new. Whether you're combining biological material with electronic elements or digital material with biological elements, you're creating a relationship that didn't exist beforehand. By using our creativity and intelligence, humans can choose to modify themselves, or others, through this process to improve quality of life, enhance certain abilities, or simply for more convenience. Some examples of this have already been created and are still currently being expanded upon, especially in the medical field. Prosthetics have been around for centuries, but only in the last decade or so have we begun to implement them with modern technology. This has led to robotic arms and legs that read messages from the brain just as an arm or leg made of flesh would. As a result of these advancements the quality of life for wounded military veterans, for injured individuals, and for children born with defects and improved greatly. That alone is reason enough to continue to invest in these technologies and in the individuals who engineer them. For those that do not have a need for prosthetics, there are many other products being worked on for the sole purpose of enhancement. Contact lenses that allow a person to see planets with the naked eye, for example. One wink and your eyes turn into telescopes, another and you're back to normal vision-all in the wink of an eye. Incredible! As soon as they discover how to allow oxygen to pass through the lens and to eye continuously, I'm sure they'll be in stores everywhere. Despite the excitement towards physicomp and body augmentations, there are present dangers that constantly need to be addressed and even more dangers that will surely come up in the future.
